Ringing in 2008 with a proposal

Monday December 31,2007

Tonight’s the night!

On Friday, several jewelers were awaiting pickups from boyfriends who had selected diamonds rings in advance, to be fitted for tonight’s romantic moment. Other customers had ordered rings for New Year’s anniversaries as well.

For many jewelers it’s the busiest time of the year. There is lots of competition on the Internet and the retailers are tight. Jewelers in several stores were doing quit nicely they said.

Kasuba agreed that diamonds are increasingly competitive business. The Internet has really tightened up the profit margins for diamonds in particular. Plenty of people will get ideas online for Diamonds rings and then come online to make a purchase; the personal touch of a store cant be found online, says Kasuba and others.

Richard Wise says, Ninety-five percent of gems sold in the United States are diamonds.

Moshe, from Diamonds on Fifth says that the holidays are certainly the busiest time of the year for him.

Engagement rings sales often are a secretive matter, on the order of a covert intelligence operation, so jewelers would not turn over their pre-engagement customers for an interviewer’s questions on the engagement ritual.

Alpha Omeha reopens doors

Monday, December 31st, 2007

After shutting it doors shortly before Christmas, and many rumors about the company shut down, Alpha Omega’s four stores all reopened before Christmas Day. The Boston Globe reported .

The Handa family is no longer running the show , but it is expected that the struggling jewelry chain will soon change hands.

The reopening of the stores confused the employees for a couple of days. They were told at one point when the stores shut down that they no longer had a job.

A review of Alpha Omega financial record by the globe showed that Handa’s debts were mounting and on Dec.22, his bank took possession of the assets at his stores.

As of Thursday, Michael O’Hara was running the daily operations at the Cambridge-based company, though Handa and his wife, Nilma, remained directors of Alpha Omega. Michael O’Hara was an investment banker with a jewelry background.

Work Policy

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL EMPLOYEES
Company Policy, Effective January 1, 2008

Dress Code
It is advised that you come to work dressed according to your salary. If we see you wearing Pradas and carrying a Gucci bag, we assume you are doing well financially, and therefore do not need a raise. If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better so that you can buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise. If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be, and therefore you do not need a raise.

Sick Days
We will no longer accept a doctor’s note as proof of illness. If you are well enough to go to the doctor, you are well enough to come to work.

Annual Leave Days
Each employee will now receive 104 days of annual leave each year. They are called Saturday and Sunday.
Bereavement Leave
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend to the arrangements. In the rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your Lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour earlier.

Toilet Use
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet. There is now a strict three minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open, and a picture will be taken. After your second offence, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board, under Chronic Offenders. Anyone caught smiling in the picture will be sanctioned under the company’s Mental Health Policy.

Lunch Break
Skinny people get thirty minutes for lunch, as they need to eat more, so that they can look healthy. Normal sized people get fifteen minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure. Chubby people get five minutes for lunch, because that’s all the time you need to drink a Slim-Fast.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternation and input should be directed elsewhere.
Thank you

Diamonds icon Lev Leviev moving to London

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Israeli’s channel 2 news reports that Israeli diamond and property magnate Lev Leviev will make London his home base. Leviev is making a move with his family to monitor the progress of AFI development, (the Russian property) unit of leviev Africa Israel investments.

In May AFI raised 1.4 billon dollars, but the share has since lost about 35 percent in trading on London stock exchange. The Russian-born Israeli made his first billon in the diamond mines of Russia and Angola and now holds the marketing rights for diamonds for Angola, the world’s fifth largest producer of rough diamonds.

The Leviev Group also has diamond retail stores in London and New York. Since 2001, however, Leviev has turned his attention to property, rapidly expanding into Manhattan and Eastern Europe.

On-off marriage a three-ring circus

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Marriage often has a nice ring to it.

But this Calgary couple’s 18-month, on-off relationship turned out to be little more then a three-ring circus.

  ·         It was the third engagment ring, used in their fourth engagement and a marriage that dissolved after just nine days that became the subject of a bitter breakup battle and civil dispute between James McManus and Corina Lyndeen McCarthy.

In a written decision released today, court of queens Bench Justice Colleen Kenny awarded the expensive custom-made ring to be returned to the husband. Kenny said it would normally be the case that an engagement ring would be considered a gift and would not be subject to distribution between the parties on marriage breakdown. But this was indeed not a normal case, she added. From engagement to separation, the relationship did not continue it just lasted over five weeks.

It all began with the first engagement In December 2005, when McManus purchased a ‘’relatively expensive’’ engagement ring for McCarthy. She ended the engagement and returned the ring. The same ring was used in their second engagement, which she again ended and gave back the ring, he then sold the ring at a significant loss.

A second ring was ordered for their third engagement but in the process of it being made, he cancelled the engagement and ring, he had to pay for the work already done.

The pair finally were engaged for a fourth time on June 20 and the husband ordered a ring according to her specifications, the one that became the subject of their break tug-of-war.

She said that she would not marry him unless he purchased another ring. He was up for that but he made it clear to her on at least three occasions that the ring should be returned to him in the event of their relationship terminated.

She had refused to have any discussions about the ring, and that she never had asked him to buy the ring, and in fact it didn’t matter to her whether she had a ring or not.

The brief marriage did not go well and on July 29 the husband took the engagement ring from the bathroom counter while she was in the shower and began to leave the residence. She saw him and followed him, repeatedly asking for him to return the ring. She later phoned him and demanded for him to return the ring. She them took him to court over possession of the disputed ring.

The husband though provided evidence of specific locations and discussions that the parties had twice before and once after receipt of the ring, wherein he made it clear that it was conditional upon their continued relationship.

Diamond icon lev leviev foes blast Sarandon

Monday, December 24th, 2007

On December 24,2007 Susan Sarandon attended a cocktail party last month in the new Madison Avenue diamond jewelry store of Lev Leviev, a diamond-dealing real-estate who owns the former New York Times building and the Apthorp building on the Upper West Side.

Now the California-based grass-roots organization has sent the star a letter asking her to ‘’publicly sever ties’’ with diamond jeweler, whom the group is shut out because he supports Jewish settlements in the West bank. Sarandon’s rep denies she’s allied with the high-end gem dealer.

In mid November the picketers, who were there for the Leviev store stood on the sidewalk with Palestinian flags, shouting, ‘’you’re glitz, you’re glam, you’re building on Palestinian land,’’ and, ‘’occupation is a drag, just say no to your gift bag. A source had said that Sarandon marched in and tried not to notice the yells outside.

                             Protest outside Leviev's shop

‘’Leviev is a very dangerous force not only in Israel. His real estate development projects has been roundly criticized for shoddy building, harsh treatment of workers and dangerous buildings and work sites.

‘’Jews who yearn and work for just a peace for Palestinians and Israelis’’ we implore you to take a public stand against Leviev.

Sarandon’s representative questioned whether the actress attending one Leviv event amounted to ‘’ties,’’ and added,’’ she has no ties to any jewelry diamond company.
