Up to $5 million in diamonds stolen

Monday, January 21st, 2008

RAM-RAIDERS broke through the window of a high-end diamond & jewelry  store in Sydney yesterday, the managed to walk away with up to $5 million in rare pink diamonds.

The thieves used a white stolen four-wheel drive Nissan to smash through the back of the Mondial Neuman store in the

Queen Victoria Building slightly before 9am.  Sergeant Paul Dunstan said that up to four people where present in the vehicle. Two of them, carrying sledgehammer and balaclavas, stormed into the shop, which happens to specialize in pink diamonds- through the broken window, which faces York Street.

The store’s manager Michael Neuman said that this was carried out with “military-style precision”. Michael said he only had a vague idea of what had been stolen. “There were many substantial items of pink diamonds and other natural-colored diamond jewelry. It’s what we’re renowned for”.

Right now Michael estimates the stolen jewelry to be worth anything between $2 and $5million. The good news he says is “There is still a lot of good stuff they didn’t get”. Staff members had just begun to open the business for the day when the car drove through the window. Luckily no one was hurt.

Adam Selim, who works in the Queen

Victoria

Building, said he heard a man running into the jewelry store screaming, “gimme your money, gimme your money”.  “Another male was on the phone yelling, ‘QVB now, QVB now’, so it looked very much like it was a set up,” he said.

The owners of the vehicle, Tony and Jenny Duddy, said it was stolen from their Drummoyne home. “We’re not all the sure on what time they came- some time in the middle of the night,” said Mr. Duddy, who was the one to discover the vehicle’s whereabouts after reading about the robbery on the Internet. It doesn’t look as if there is much damage according to the police and there was nobody hurt which is the most important thing.

A woman working next door to the jewelers saw the dramas unfold. “I was going upstairs to the stock room when I saw the car pull up,” she said. “ It mounted the curb and I just thought it was a bad driver. Then I saw a guy who was masked jump out of the back seat and move a café table out of the way. The car rammed into the window.” She said the man went back to the car to retrieve a bag out of the back seat before entering the store.    A security guard tried to stop the robbers by standing in front of their getaway car, a red Audi sedan.

ICE USB drive showered in diamonds

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

When you make the big bucks you can’t be stuck with just any old USB drive like those common folks. You have to stand out from the crowd and spend a small fortune on a diamond encrusted zip drive. Personally I’d be happy with one that was a bright color, but then again I fall under that common category.

The drive called ICE is being offered by miiSTOR. It is made of Hallmarked platinum and is hand-set with 456 white diamonds. Although I may be one of the few girls to ever say this, but 456 diamonds just seems like overkill.

The ICE USB drive is being sold for $29,000. Which happens to be really close to the price of my dream car, call me practical, but I’d pick the car.

Gold tops $900 an ounce

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

High oil prices, a weak dollar and fears of a U.S. recession continue to push the price of gold skyward.

Bloomberg news reported that gold futures for February delivery rose to $906.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The first time gold topped $900 an ounce was on Friday, when the price jumped $6.50 to $900.10 in morning trading, an all-time high and a psychologically important milestone, The Associated Press reported.

“It’s a reflection of market sentiment: Gold is a hedge against uncertainty and right now it’s the best bet,” Carlos Sanchez, a precious-metals analyst at CPM Group in New York, told the AP. “None of the other investment options look that great and gold does.”

Despite topping $900 an ounce, when adjusted for inflation, gold remains well below its all-time high. In 1980, gold cost $875 an ounce, which would equal $2,115 to $2,200 an ounce today.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that prices increased for platinum, palladium and silver as well.

Silver for immediate delivery rose $2.63 to $16.4113 an ounce, platinum increased $1 to $1,578 an ounce, and palladium gained $1.25 to $379.75 an ounce.

Britney Spears was spotted laughing and kissing her new boyfriend Adnan Ghalib while looking at engagement rings, NW reports.

Britney Spears

Although her paparazzo lover is married, he allegedly proposed to the singer just hours after her hospital release, triggering huge concern among her family that she’ll run away with the man they feel is taking advantage of a very sick girl. They are desperate to get Britney away from Adnan and into a treatment facility, but the pair disappeared yet again last week, leaving LA for Mexico in a private jet.

It was the second time they’d vanished, with Adnan earlier whisking Brit away from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she’d been held since the dramatic meltdown that ended in a four-hour police siege just two days before.
