Boycott of Leviev’s Settlement on Mother’s Day

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Soon after Leviev tried to open two other jewelry stores in the Emirate, on Mother’s Day eve he posted an ad in the New York Times with the title, “Happy Mother’s Day.”

Mother’s Day was originally established in 1870 by an abolitionist and activist named, Julia Ward Howe, in order to unite women against war. Instead, it seems like its being turned into another day for making money in the diamond district.

Together with the very brutal Dos santos regime, Leviev hires the Angolan security  company to mine diamonds in Angola. The Angolan security companies have been indicted of, “humiliation, whipping, torture, sexual abuse, and in some cases assassinations.” The area in which Leviev mines, making his millions of dollars annually, also has the poorest of people in the country, sometimes without schools, health services, roads, or even filtered water.

Mothers, mainly Arab and Jewish mothers, were at a fury with Leviev for using Mother’s Day as a day of profit. Therefore, a boycott was developed by Adalah-NY along with some New York mothers and Palestinian mothers from the West Bank, in two villages where Leviev had built settlements.

The angry mothers felt that since the governemtn isn’t going to do anything about the situation, they were. A group of women made colorful Mother’s Day cards labeled, “A Special Mother’s Day Greeting about the Lev Leviev Group of Companies.” Beneath that was a picture of a woman protesting. These cards were being distributed right in front of the Lev Leviev store on Madison, in NYC. The goal of this boycott is to deprecate violence, support humanrights, and stop using Mother’s Day as a day of profit for corporations.   Â

Popping The Big Secret- Jenna Bush Engaged

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The secret was hard to keep but now that Jenna Bush is married people should know where her dazzling engagement ring was designed.

Henry Hager, now the husband of Jenna Bush was looking for an antique designed engagement ring for his future wife, something similar to his great- grandmother’s diamond ring.

Jane Sternheimer, owner and president of Charles Schwarzschild Inc. was lucky enough to have found out about the engagement before the question was popped to Jenna. Hager had come to her company for the ring. Jae Sternheimer says, “Henry had well considered ideas regarding the type of ring he wished to present: classic and conservative….. He wanted the center stone to be flanked with sapphires and the ring to be made in platinum.”

Not to waste much time, Sternheimer began making phone calls in search for matching sapphires. Sternheimer finally got the sapphires and had the ring ready to be picked up on August ninth, the day Hager had asked for it.

Hager and his mother came to pick up the ring and while Hager’s mother snapped a few photo shots, Hager rattled on about his plans. On his way out of Sternheimer’s jewelry store, Hager was very polite and modest as to make sure to slip a thank you note on Jane’s desk.  Â

Americans Spending Too Much???

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Day by day, headlines are posted on newspapers describing how bad consumer spending has become in the U.S. The entire year of 2008 is calculated to approximately spend evenly as 2007. the estimated amount on diamonds and jewelry spending is $64-65 billion. Reporters keep getting it all wrong, especially now, when Americans are more cautious about spending on anything at all. An editor of a jewelry share took notice of this and warned his members to “stop listening to the TV and stop reading the newspaper.”

During February, $380 billion was spent on retail sales, which was flat with the past year. If the retail sales for February were an annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the country then American spending would be right above Belgium, and just below the Netherland’s Gross Domestic Product. When including other payments besides for retail sales, such as monthly payments and home mortgages, there is an estimate of $792 billion on spending, which is equivalent to Brazil’s GDP. It is pretty obvious that Americand haven’t stopped spending.

Even with all the spending, it is clear that a typical American is still holding back from spending too much. Due to the booming of the population and America being one of the fastest developing countries it makes it hard for consumers to spend less. As the population continues to grow and develop, products become cheaper such as, microwaves, TVs, clothing and appliances. In an average home there are multiple televisions, more clothing and toys, compared to . All in all we see that during bad times, they were able to keep a good budget because all through good times Americans spent wisely.  ¼/p>

$750,000.00 Worth of Jewels Stolen in Broad Daylight

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Armed with knives and ski masks on, three men wait on the block by the LBJ Freeway, close to the Dallas North Tollway. Wednesday afternoon, around 3:00 p.m. a broker begins to make his way to his car with $750,000 worth of jewels in his suitcase, when seeing his car blocked by another car and three thieves standing in front of it.

The broker impulsively begins to run in the opposite direction while the thieves chase him. Once they get the suitcase, they slice his tires to be sure the broker doesnt come after them.

Luckily the broker was not injured or hurt.

Police said that close to where the diamonds have been stolen is a huge building filled with diamonds and jewelry brokers.

This incident is very much similar to a diamond theft that happened a month earlier. A Garland jeweler left his car parked outside the diamond building. Loaded in the trunk of the car was $600,000 worth of diamonds and pearls. When the jeweler returned an hour later the car was gone and was found by police the next morning by an apartment close by.
