Jeweler to Celebrities, Jacob Arabov is Sentenced to Prison

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Jacob Arabov, 42, a Manhattan jeweler to celebrities was caught and fined $50,000 in federal court in Detroit for lying to federal about the possessing jewelry that he got from a major cocaine trafficker.

In October Arabov pleaded guilty after lying about the ownership of $5 million worth of jewelry taken from the drug suspect, Terry Flenory and how connection with the “Black Mafia Family.” His case had a possibility of sending him to prison for 37-46 months. Except, the U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn had leniency because Jacob was known for being charitable and gave him until January 15th to report to prison for 30 months.

The jeweler told agents that he hadn’t actually sold the items, but loaned them to Flenory to help Flenory get the jewelry back. Both, Flenory and his brother, Demetrius Flenory are a part of 63 people that were suspected since the case in 2005. Why Arabov lied for Flenory is unclear at this point. The brothers pleaded guilty and are now waiting for the result in their case.

Arabov is quoted telling Judge Cohn, “I feel ashamed that I broke the law of this country that’s been so good to me and my family.”

Arabov is a Jewish immigrant from Uzbekistan who moved to the U.S. with his parents as a teenager. He entered the jewelry trade and later on opened the prominent jewelry store in Manhattan Jacob and Co. Many of his clients were celebrities who included hip hop star, Elton John and other entertainment and fashion celebrities.

Arabov did not need to cooperate against other defendants, but he did agree to forfeit $2 million to the government. In addition, one of his lawyers assured him that his business would continue running during his absence.

Dawn Ison and Michael Leibson, assistant U.S. Attorneys say they were very much satisfied with the outcome of Arabov’s sentence. The case was thoroughly inspected by the Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation.

Treasured metals high prices

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Once thought to be little more than trinkets, old jewelry stuffed away in attics and keepsakes in boxes has suddenly become a small treasure because of the extraordinarily high price of gold and silver.

Gold which is now being sold for $900 an ounce has more than dubbeld compared to four years ago and silver has hit a record high of $20 an ounce up from last years $7.

People are now walking into stores and selling there gold and silver some people have even resorted into selling the metal coupling out of their air-conditioners and walking out of the store with thousands of dollars.

However lucky these prices are not making a dent in those people who are wishing to buy engagement rings.

These people don’t care that the gold or silver in their engagement rings are going to cost more because it is believed that when the economy is going through some rough times gold and silver is looked at to be rarity and beauty and who wouldn’t want to have that.

It’s no surprise that Jamie Lynn Spears amt up her own engagement rumors buy flaunting her diamond engagement ring.

However while Jamie Lynn took no problem in flaunting her ring; but when it came time to confirm the rumors she wouldn’t do such a thing.

If Jamie Lynn’s ring is turley an engagement ring than why is she wearing it on the wrong hand?

Celebrity jeweler Cynthia Wolf who designed older sister Brittany’s engagement ring says “it looks like a round diamond very 1980’s, with a yellow gold band. It looks like a wedding set with two different bands.”

Cynthia estimates that the ring is only about a half carat and probably cost between 8,000 and 10,000 if it was custom made; but if bought off the shelf it could cost much much less.

If you like a white color you may prefer to go with white gold; however; with white gold you need to keep in mind that as time goes on it will lose its whiteness due to wear.

If you like a silvery white color than palladium is the way to go for you. This is white color that last however it can be a bit less treasured than platinum.

Gold tops $900 an ounce

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

High oil prices, a weak dollar and fears of a U.S. recession continue to push the price of gold skyward.

Bloomberg news reported that gold futures for February delivery rose to $906.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The first time gold topped $900 an ounce was on Friday, when the price jumped $6.50 to $900.10 in morning trading, an all-time high and a psychologically important milestone, The Associated Press reported.

“It’s a reflection of market sentiment: Gold is a hedge against uncertainty and right now it’s the best bet,” Carlos Sanchez, a precious-metals analyst at CPM Group in New York, told the AP. “None of the other investment options look that great and gold does.”

Despite topping $900 an ounce, when adjusted for inflation, gold remains well below its all-time high. In 1980, gold cost $875 an ounce, which would equal $2,115 to $2,200 an ounce today.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that prices increased for platinum, palladium and silver as well.

Silver for immediate delivery rose $2.63 to $16.4113 an ounce, platinum increased $1 to $1,578 an ounce, and palladium gained $1.25 to $379.75 an ounce.
