A characteristic in some diamonds that can affect its value is known as fluorescence, which is a reaction to UV light. When exposed to ultraviolet light, small percentages of diamonds fluoresce, or emit light. Fluorescence is listed on a diamond grading report and is graded None, Faint, Slight, Medium, Strong or Extreme. Some reports also list the color of the fluorescence, which can include blue, yellow, or white. A fluorescence grade of Very Strong can make a diamond with a near-colorless grade look even whiter, or, in some instances, give the diamond a slight hazy or oily appearance. |
